The Color Purple (2023) is a musical remake of the 1986 Spielberg film of the same name. This film is directed by Blitz Bazawule and stars Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, and Danielle Brooks. The film tells the story of Celie a women who is forced into a marriage by her father who had previously raped her leading to the conception of two children who were separated by Celie at birth. The film continues a trend of films such as Wonka and the new Mean Girls that were musical adaptations of established films despite not being marketed as such.
The film has fantastic performances from the whole cast, and some entertaining musical numbers. The production quality was top notch and the film was very well directed by Blazawule with a difficult task of adapting a broadway musical to screen. Something that does not always work out well as seen in 2005’s Rent, and 2019’s Cats.
