Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is written and directed by series creator George Miller and is the fifth installment in the Max Max franchise. It serves as a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road and stars Anya Taylor Joy (playing a younger version of Furiosa originally played by Charlize Theron) and Chris Hemsworth.
Let's start with the negatives the film does not have as much action as Fury Road and lots of setup. Although I enjoyed the first and third acts it drags in the middle and Anya Taylor Joy is fantastic as Furiosa but not introduced for over an hour into the film. The first hour primarily focuses on young Furiosa played by child actress Alyla Brown who gives a solid performance but is sidelined for long stretches. Chris Hemsworth is a fantastic villain playing Dementus, a scavenger whose group of followers initially captures Furiosa and the second act of the film was the worst part largely due to his absence.
The inclusion of Praetorian Jack played by Tom Burke provides the presence missed by Max within the film as he fills his role as a leather jacket-toting gunslinger in the post-apocalyptic landscape. While also serving as one of Furiosas few friends, and confidants, with hints of romance. As well as being one of the only characters within the film with any morality.
The film has a fantastic ending, the action scenes they do have are amazing and George Miller is once again excellent at directing the world and characters he knows so well. This is a great watch at a drive in near you.
