The Garden Drive-in is a two screen drive-in located in Hunlock, Pennsylvania. It was opened 70 years ago back in 1952. This weekend, on Saturday, July 2nd, the Garden Drive-in will celebrate its 70th anniversary with special events and fireworks show. They will also have $1 hot dogs and popcorn (as long as supplies last) and other fun events such as face painting, bounce houses for the kids and more.
But at one point, it was uncertain if the Garden Drive-in would make it to 60 years of operation, more less 70 years. The Garden Drive-in is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River and has been subject to flooding several times over the years. Just as recently as 2018, the drive-in was flooded to the point where they had to cease operations until the waters receded.
But in 2011, the Garden Drive-in was inundated with high flood waters that resulted from the remnants of Hurricane Lee. One of the screens, the concession building and the projection building were all destroyed. At the time, it was uncertain if the Garden Drive-in would be able to rebuild and re-open and some thought that 2011 may have been the last season for the Garden Drive-in.
But the Garden Drive-in did rebuild and built back better and has continued to entertain families in their area since that time. We hope they continue for another 70 years.
If you are in the area, please visit the Garden Drive-in this weekend to help them celebrate 70 years of operation.
