Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is directed by Lauren Montgomery and stars Eric Nam as Aang, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Dionne Quan as Toph, Steven Yeun as Zuko, and Dave Bautista as Tagah. Set thirteen years after the Hundred Year War, the film reunites Team Avatar for a new adventure involving a forgotten Avatar, a powerful airbending staff, and the mysterious Tagah.
The movie is a good return to this world, even if it occasionally feels rushed. At only 99 minutes, several story beats move by too quickly, especially Tagah’s transformation into the central villain and the group’s journey to the hidden island. Tagah is also somewhat overpowered, to the point that his abilities occasionally make the conflict feel less balanced than it should.
Still, those issues are outweighed by everything the film gets right. The nostalgia of seeing Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko together again carries enormous emotional weight, but the movie does more than simply rely on familiarity. The new voice cast delivers excellent performances, particularly Nam as an older Aang and Bautista as the wounded, dangerous Tagah. The animation is also outstanding, blending expressive 2D character work with sweeping environments and some of the most visually impressive bending sequences the franchise has produced.
While the story could have benefited from another twenty minutes to breathe, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is a visually spectacular, heartfelt continuation that understands why these characters remain so beloved. Any Avatar fan should come away very satisfied.
