Crime 101 is directed by Bart Layton and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Halle Berry as Mike “James” Davis, Detective Lou Lubesnick, and Sharon. The film centers on Mike, a disciplined Los Angeles jewel thief who follows a strict personal code while carrying out high-value robberies along the California coast. His careful methods and ability to stay ahead of law enforcement have made him almost mythical in criminal circles. However, a determined LAPD detective begins piecing together the pattern behind the robberies, setting the stage for a tense cat-and-mouse game.
Set between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, the story follows Mike as he navigates the increasingly dangerous world surrounding his profession. At the same time, Sharon, an insurance broker frustrated with her lack of recognition at work, becomes connected to events unfolding around the diamond trade and high-end clients. As tensions rise and multiple players enter the picture, both the police and criminals find themselves drawn toward the same escalating situation.
The film succeeds largely because of its confident direction and strong performances. Hemsworth delivers one of his best performances outside the Marvel universe, portraying Mike with a cool professionalism that anchors the film. Ruffalo brings a grounded intensity to Detective Lubesnick, while Berry adds emotional depth to Sharon. Barry Keoghan is particularly memorable in a volatile supporting role, adding a sense of unpredictability whenever he appears on screen.
I loved the direction and performances throughout. The action sequences are tightly staged and give the film a sharp, kinetic energy that feels reminiscent of Heat. In many ways, Crime 101 feels like the Heat of the 21st century and stands as one of the best action films of the 2020s so far. The entire cast is strong, though I would have liked to see more of Nick Nolte, whose character largely disappears after the first act.
Overall, Crime 101 is a stylish, character-driven crime thriller that delivers strong performances and gripping action. It’s absolutely worth seeing at a drive-in near you.
