Digger is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and stars Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell. Rockwell is a powerful oil magnate whose latest drilling operation leads to an environmental crisis with potentially devastating consequences. As the danger grows, he and the people around him must confront the fallout while attempting to protect their own interests.
The film approaches its story through satire, using Rockwell’s world to explore wealth, power, and responsibility. It also takes a more unconventional approach to its narrative, adding layers that ask the audience to consider how stories about major events are presented and interpreted.
Cruise delivers a standout performance as Rockwell. He brings the character the larger-than-life presence the role demands, making him an entertaining figure to watch even as his decisions drive the story toward disaster. For fans accustomed to seeing Cruise in action-heavy roles, his performance offers a different opportunity to see him take on an ambitious character.
Unfortunately, the film’s plot becomes too meta to reach its full potential. Its layered storytelling is an interesting idea, but it ultimately holds the film back from being great. Rather than allowing the central premise and Cruise’s performance to carry the story, the film becomes caught up in its own presentation.
There is still enough here to make Digger worth seeing once, particularly for Cruise fans interested in watching him tackle something different.
Digger is an ambitious satire and worth seeing at a drive-in near you.
