The Dog Stars is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce as survivors navigating the remnants of a world devastated by a global pandemic. Adapted from Peter Heller’s novel, the film follows Hig, a lonely pilot who leaves the safety of his Colorado airfield after receiving a radio transmission suggesting that a community has survived.
Scott and cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt make the empty American West look beautiful and threatening. Sweeping mountains, abandoned cities, and isolated valleys create a haunting sense of a civilization swallowed by nature. The quiet landscapes say more about Hig’s grief and loneliness than the screenplay does.
The four leads give committed performances. Elordi brings sensitivity and restraint to Hig, making his hope feel credible rather than naïve. Brolin supplies the film’s harder edge as the armed Bangley, while Qualley gives Cima warmth and resourcefulness. Pearce adds wary authority as her father, Pops. Together, they bring humanity to characters who could have become familiar post-apocalyptic archetypes.
Unfortunately, the narrative moves slowly. Hig’s journey unfolds as disconnected episodes rather than a steadily building story, and the shift toward cannibalistic villains feels conventional after the film’s reflective opening. Even the action sequences arrive too sporadically to generate sustained tension, while several emotional developments seem rushed despite the lengthy running time. The Dog Stars features fantastic scenery and excellent performances from its four main leads; however, its listless narrative and pacing problems prevent it from reaching the heights of peak post-apocalyptic films.
