Moana 2 is directed by Dana Ledoux Miller, Jason Hand, and David Derrick Jr. It stars Auli'i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as the demi-god Maui. The film is a sequel to 2016s Moana and despite some highlights fails to live up to its predecessor.
The main flaw in the second film is the music, originally done in the first film by Lin-Manuel Miranda. His presence is missed and this film does not produce any songs on the level of the hits from the original film.
However, the film is not without merit. Its animation is fantastic, and it has a solid blend of action, adventure, and comedy. Including some surprising emotional moments that deal with some heavy subjects and some new characters that provide some laughs and color to the film. But with the lack of a clear narrative, or overarching villain and a fairly similar plot as the original the film still feels like it could have been a lot better and in some ways is a setup for a third film.
