The Odyssey is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Matt Damon as Odysseus in an adaptation of Homer’s epic, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal. One of the year’s best films, Nolan’s take on the legendary journey combines massive-scale action with a surprisingly intimate portrait of a warrior haunted by the consequences of his own choices.
Matt Damon delivers a standout lead performance, portraying Odysseus as both a brilliant strategist and a deeply flawed man gradually crushed by years of war, loss, and guilt. The film’s greatest strength is the scale of his journey, with the encounters with Polyphemus, the Sirens, Scylla, and the voyage into Hades providing some of Nolan’s most impressive action and imagery to date.
The enormous supporting cast is used remarkably well. Anne Hathaway brings warmth and resolve to Penelope, while Tom Holland gives Telemachus a convincing mixture of uncertainty and courage. Jon Bernthal makes a strong impression as the battle-hardened Menelaus, and Samantha Morton is particularly memorable in her limited screen time as Circe, the mysterious witch who transforms Odysseus’ men into pigs and directs him toward the underworld.
The nonlinear structure can occasionally make an already sprawling story feel even denser, but Nolan keeps the emotional focus firmly on Odysseus and his desperate attempt to return home. Epic, visually spectacular, and anchored by Damon’s commanding performance, The Odyssey is blockbuster filmmaking on an enormous scale. Rush to see this one at a drive-in near you.
