Scream VII Review

Scream VII is directed by Kevin Williamson and stars Neve Campbell, Isabel May, and Courteney Cox as Sidney Prescott-Evans, Tatum Evans, and Gale Weathers. The film revisits Sidney years after the original Woodsboro killings, now living a quieter life in Indiana with her husband and children. However, when the Ghostface murders begin again—this time targeting Sidney’s teenage daughter—the past once again refuses to stay buried.

The story follows Sidney and Tatum as a new wave of Ghostface attacks spreads through their community. As the killings escalate, old allies return and a new group of teenagers become entangled in the mystery. Like previous entries in the franchise, the film blends slasher suspense with meta commentary about horror movies and legacy sequels, while building toward another confrontation between survivors and the masked killer.

There are elements here that longtime fans will enjoy. Neve Campbell once again proves why Sidney Prescott remains one of horror’s most iconic final girls, bringing both strength and emotional weight to the role. Isabel May is a solid addition as Tatum, providing a new generational perspective within the story, while Courteney Cox continues to bring energy and familiarity as Gale Weathers. The film also delivers several tense chase sequences and moments of dark humor that feel consistent with the tone established throughout the franchise.

That said, the film struggles in some key areas. Outside of Scream 3, this may be the weakest entry in the series, but I enjoyed the focus on the original film's protagonist, Sydney Prescott. Much of that comes down to one of the franchise’s weaker Ghostface reveals and a somewhat gimmicky use of AI within the story that never feels as clever as the film seems to think it is. While the mystery and suspense still function at times, the narrative lacks the sharpness and originality that made earlier entries stand out.

Overall, it’s a mixed installment in the long-running horror series. However, fans of the franchise will still find it worth seeing at a drive-in near you.
