Street Fighter is directed by Kitao Sakurai and stars Andrew Koji as Ryu and Noah Centineo as Ken Masters. The martial arts film follows the two estranged fighters as they become caught up in a new World Warrior tournament organized by the powerful M. Bison. With the help of Interpol agent Chun-Li, they find themselves facing dangerous opponents and a threat that extends beyond the competition itself.
Based on the popular video game series, the film brings a wide range of recognizable fighters to the screen. Its story combines the rivalry and history between Ryu and Ken with the spectacle of a tournament filled with formidable competitors.
The film’s fantastic action scenes are its biggest strength. The fights give audiences the kind of energy and spectacle they would hope to see from a Street Fighter adaptation, and the animated sequences are another highlight. Those moments help capture the visual excitement associated with the games and give the film some of its most memorable scenes.
Unfortunately, the wonky pacing and script prevent the movie from being as strong as it could have been. The action provides plenty of entertainment, but the story surrounding it does not always come together as smoothly. As a result, Street Fighter falls short of Resident Evil, another video game adaptation released a few weeks earlier that makes better use of its momentum.
Even with those shortcomings, fans of the franchise and martial arts action will find plenty to enjoy.
Street Fighter is an entertaining action film and worth seeing at a drive-in near you.
