Superman is directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet as Superman in the first film in the brand new DC Universe, which reboots the failed DCEU.
Thirty years ago, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van sent their infant son Kal-El to Earth to escape Krypton’s destruction. Raised by the Kents in Smallville, Clark grows into the world’s most powerful hero, maintaining his secret identity as a Daily Planet reporter. When Lex Luthor’s twisted plan turns the world against him, Superman must fight not only for his life but for the trust of humanity itself.
This is, hands down, the best Superman film since Superman II. James Gunn has delivered an epic, emotional, and at times surprisingly funny take on the Man of Steel that balances classic heroics with modern sensibility. The scale of the story is immense—kaiju battles, pocket dimensions, intercontinental invasions—but at its core it’s about Superman’s compassion and moral clarity in a messy world.
I absolutely loved the performances of the entire cast. David Corenswet is terrific as Clark Kent / Superman, bringing genuine warmth, vulnerability, and authority to both roles. Rachel Brosnahan is a perfect Lois Lane—smart, determined, and with great chemistry with Corenswet. Nicholas Hoult steals the show as Lex Luthor, playing him with obsessive menace and unsettling charisma.
The supporting cast is also fantastic. Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen is a highlight, giving us a truly likeable, funny, and loyal friend to Clark and Lois. Nathan Fillion is perfectly cast as the abrasive, hilarious Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, and Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific is another standout, with gravitas and moral complexity.
However, I did wish the film gave us more screentime with Clark Kent himself. Superman is absolutely the focus of the movie—his battles, his moral dilemmas, his public persona—but we don't get as much of his quiet, grounded life at the Daily Planet. The dual identity is a big part of the character’s appeal, and while the film nods to it (including the clever use of the hypnotic glasses idea), I wanted even more time with "Clark" as a person.
Highlights of the film include:
Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, who is funny, heartfelt, and integral to the plot.
Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, delivering big laughs without undercutting the stakes.
Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, bringing real humanity and complexity to the Justice Gang.
Overall, Superman is a thrilling, heartfelt, and highly entertaining reboot that proves the character can soar again on the big screen. It’s the Superman movie fans have been waiting for—one that honors the past while forging a bold new path for the DC Universe.
