The Wild Robot Review

by Released : 2024-09-27

The Wild Robot is the latest animated film from Dreamworks. It is directed by Chris Sanders and stars Lupita Nyong'o as a futuristic robot designed to perform directives for humans. It is the final film to be entirely directed in-house at Dreamworks a studio home to franchises like Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods with the latter two being directed by Sanders.

In the film a Rozzum unit robot created by the fictional company Universal Dynamics crash lands in the wilderness. Typically these robots are designed to be emotionless and perform whatever task they are granted but Rozzum 7134 or Roz for short struggles with finding directives in the wilderness. She eventually discovers a lone gosling egg from a nest she accidentally destroyed after running away from a bear. When it hatches the gosling (Brightbill), who is a runt and unlikely to survive in the wilderness, imprints himself on to her now viewing Roz as his mother. Now Roz and a sly red fox named Fink (played by Pedro Pascal) are tasked with helping Brightbill learn to fly north before winter.

The film is very heartwarming and the animation is fantastic some of the best I've seen since Spiderverse. The interactions and relationship between Roz, Fink, and Brightbill are the highlight of the film. Although the villains are underwhelming and the third act stalls a bit the film overall is a fantastic family film and a must-see at a drive-in near you.
